Beatification
The Family of Holy Cross rejoices at the beatification of our holy founder, Blessed Basil Anthony Mary Moreau, on Saturday, September 15 — the congregation's patronal feast of Our Lady of Holy Cross — in the birthplace of the congregation, Le Mans, France. Below you will find some links to help you get to know the Church's newest "Blessed".
PRAYER FOR THE INTERCESSION OF BASIL MOREAU
Lord Jesus,
You inspired Father Basil Moreau to found the religious family of Holy Cross to continue your mission among the People of God. May he be for us a model of zealous service, an example of fidelity, and an inspiration as we strive to be followers of Jesus. May the Church be moved to proclaim his saintliness for the good of all people. Lord Jesus, you said, "Ask and you shall receive." I dare to come to you to ask that you hear my prayer. It is through the intercession of Blessed Basil Moreau that I ask ... (state your intention). May I learn to imitate his holiness and service and look to him confidently in times of need.
As a reminder of the Redeemer who brings victory over suffering,
Moreau gave his order a motto drawn from a liturgical hymn[AMDG1]
"Ave Crux, Spes Unica," or "Hail the Cross, Our Only Hope."
Apostolic Letter of Beatification: From Pope Benedict XVI, read by Cardinal José Saraiva Martins, prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, at the beatification ceremony in Le Mans.
Video of the Mass of Beatification: Presided by the Most Rev. Jacques Faivre, bishop of Le Mans. (120 min., requires RealPlayer downloadable here; presented in French by KTO, Télévision Catholique; click "Regarder la video")
Who was Basil Moreau? Holy Cross priest Dan Pitrie, C.S.C., writes of Moreau's trust in Divine Providence, his confidence in the cross as our only hope and his zeal for making God known, loved and served, in this month's edition of the St. Anthony Messenger.
Human and Holy: Moreau rediscovered by congregations he founded: (from the South Bend Tribune) During the last half-century, a new and different portrait has been emerging from studies of Father Basil Anthony Moreau's writings. The man whose "uncompromising integrity (came) with a keen sense of justice" also urged the members of Holy Cross to " 'have great respect, sincere esteem, and cordial affection for each other, living together as friends strictly united.'
